We’re into layering these days, and we’re not alone. It’s an easy way to put a new twist on some old favorites, or experiment with some of fall’s latest trends without committing too much. Follow our tips for layering like a pro so you’re comfortable and stylish no matter what Mother Nature has in store.
- Don’t overdo it. Layering just a few key pieces has more of an impact than a mish-mash of everything you’re loving right now.
- Contrast is key. Effective layering happens when you pair unexpected and contrasting items together. Think in terms of silhouettes, colors, and patterns – a hip-length tank underneath a cropped jacket with military-style epaulets, for example. Or a ruffled top layered under a long, open cardigan, reined in by a cute slim belt.
- Mix and match. Are your favorite pieces right now all from the same store? Try to mix them in with other items – that great thrifted top you bought last fall, or the sweater you snagged on sale online. This way you’ll avoid looking like you stepped out of a catalog, and you’ll show off your own personal style.
- Accessories count! Don’t forget scarves and even jewelry make a difference when you’re putting together your layered look.
