By 2020, most U.S. consumers will use smartphones to pay for their goods and services, according to a new study from the Pew Internet & American Life Project and Elon University.
Given its trajectory, mobile commerce, or m-commerce, has many brands and retailers scrambling to stay ahead of the curve.
A ShopNBC executive at the Mobile Shopping Spring Summit said that revenue generated from mobile has grown 3.5 times over the past 13 months, largely driven by the iPad. And research from the Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle Monitor™ Survey revealed that 7% of consumers planned to use their mobile devices to shop for holiday gifts last year, and that number is only expected to grow this year.
Who are the real trend-setters in this category? We take a look at some retailers who are making their m-commerce presence unique.
Zappos, an already progressive brand, stays ahead of the game with its mobile platform. The application is not a scaled down version of their site, but instead a platform to view products up close. Visitors can also receive push notifications for when items come back in stock, something unique to the mobile application and yet another component that ensures Zappos continues to redefine itself in the space.
Amazon takes a slightly different tact with its mobile application, which offers a very streamlined and efficient version of the actual site. Users can get product details, read reviews, shop with 1-Click ordering, and even scan barcodes or take pictures of items to compare prices.
Gucci has actually turned the tables with its mobile application – by outfitting some of its employees, not customers, with iPhones. Now savvy buyers can “check out” with an employee anywhere in the store, for a seamless shopping experience.
Coach has also ramped up its mobile presence in the last year, and has been experimenting with QR codes in print ads that direct users to a mobile site where they can purchase items directly from their phones.
